Ida Lupino falls for bad guy John Garfield in this atmospheric film noir set on the Brooklyn waterfront. Excellent cast. Outstanding back lot set. It was released six months before the US entered World War 2. The plot based on Irwin Shaw's play, "The Gentle People," clearly is an allegory for the Nazi takeover of Europe.
TRIVIA: During the birthday party scene the song on the jukebox is "The Merry Go Round Broke Down," which is better known as the Looney Tunes title theme.
